Four puzzles that stay the same for good: play them in any order, stop when you like, and come back to finish.

About the puzzles in this set

Hidden Word

Five letters and six tries. The answer comes from the most common two thirds of the English five-letter words.

If two guesses leave you with few vowels, think of a double letter: about three answers in ten repeat one.

Skyscrapers

A 5 × 5 grid in which the heights 1 to 5 appear once in every row and once in every column. 11 of the 20 edge clues are printed, and one tower is already standing.

With no 1 on the edge, compare opposite clues: they add up to at most 6, and the tallest tower stands between the two sides at a distance that fits both.

Golf

Seven columns of five cards, 16 cards in the stock and one on the pile. The solver cleared this deal in 45 moves, turning 10 of the stock cards.

A king sits on top of a column. With no wrap from king to ace, only a queen can follow a king — plan where it will come from.

Four in a Row

Light to move and win within 3 moves, whatever the other side replies. Key ideas: block first, forcing sequence, horizontal line.

Look for a first move that forces a reply, then one more that creates two threats at once.
