About Toque
Toque is a small puzzle site with one idea: a short, varied set of puzzles for the start of the day. A word, a grid, a card deal and a board problem take about as long as a cup of coffee, and each one asks for a different kind of thinking. The name is the knitted winter hat — the thing you pull on before going out on a cold morning.
How the puzzles are made
Every puzzle is generated by code from a fixed seed, and checked before you see it. The skyscraper grids come with a logical solver that proves there is exactly one solution. Each Golf deal is played to the end by a solver before it is used. Each board problem is proved with an exhaustive search over both sides' moves, so exactly one first move wins. The numbered sets of the archive are generated when the site is built; the daily set comes from the date, the same for everyone.
What the site does not do
You will find no sign-in, no adverts, no visitor statistics and no scripts from other companies here. Your scores, streak and unfinished puzzles are stored in your own browser and never sent anywhere. Toque has no prizes and nothing to buy — the puzzles are the whole point.
Languages
Toque speaks four languages: English, Italian, Hungarian and Finnish. The grids, the deals and the board problems are the same in every language; the hidden word uses a separate word list for each language, so each version has its own words.
Word lists
The hidden word uses lists derived from these sources:
Word lists: SCOWL (Kevin Atkinson), wordfreq (Robyn Speer, CC BY-SA 4.0), Morph-it! (Marco Baroni, Eros Zanchetta, CC BY-SA), Wiktionary contributors (CC BY-SA 4.0), Magyar Ispell (László Németh, Ferenc Godó, MPL 2.0), Kotus Nykysuomen sanalista (CC BY 4.0), Yle Uutisten taajuussanakirja (Daniel Radice, CC BY 4.0; Yle, CC BY 4.0). Adapted and filtered; the lists are available under the same licences.
The English, Italian and Hungarian lists are distributed under CC BY-SA 4.0 (the Hungarian ones also under the terms of Magyar Ispell, MPL 2.0 / LGPL 3+), and the Finnish lists under CC BY 4.0. They were filtered to remove names, abbreviations and words that do not belong at a breakfast table.
