Which letters to try first
The answer lists are different in every language, and so are the best opening letters. Here are the counts.
These figures come straight from the list the game draws its answers from — the 1011 words of the medium level in English — so they describe the puzzles you actually meet here, not general text. A percentage means: in how many answers out of a hundred the letter appears at least once.
The most common letters in each language
| Language | Most common letters | Words with a repeated letter | Common last letters |
|---|---|---|---|
| English | E 48 %, A 42 %, R 41 %, T 32 %, O 30 %, S 29 % | 30 % | E 21 %, T 12 %, Y 11 % |
| Italian | O 64 %, A 57 %, E 34 %, R 34 %, T 32 %, S 27 % | 52 % | O 47 %, A 35 %, E 14 % |
| Hungarian | A 36 %, R 30 %, E 30 %, S 29 %, T 29 %, L 27 % | 36 % | S 14 %, A 12 %, T 9 % |
| Finnish | A 50 %, I 44 %, T 31 %, K 31 %, U 30 %, O 27 % | 57 % | A 30 %, I 21 %, O 11 % |
What this means in English
In English, E appears in 48 % of the answers, A in 42 % and R in 41 %. A first guess that covers E, A and R together with one or two of T, O and S will light up something on most mornings. The rarest letters — X, J, Q, Z — turn up in only a handful of answers, so they can wait.
The end of the word deserves a thought. E closes 21 % of English answers, followed by T and Y. Once the vowels are known, settling the last letter often decides the rest.
Repeated letters are more common than they feel: 30 % of the answers use one letter at least twice. An answer has 1.9 vowels on average, so when two vowels are found and nothing else fits, a double consonant is worth a try.
In the other languages
Italian words mostly end in a vowel, and O and A lead the list by a long way. More than half of the Italian answers repeat a letter — think of double consonants and repeated vowels.
Hungarian spreads its letters more evenly. Accented vowels are separate letters: á is not a, and ő is not ö. Two-letter sounds such as sz or gy count as two tiles.
Finnish answers are rich in A, I and the double letters typical of the language: more than half repeat a letter. Ä and ö are letters of their own, and many words end in a, i, o or ä.
