Free and funded
Every morning set, every numbered set in the archive and every free game on Toque is free, and there is no account to make. Running the site still costs money: hosting, a domain name and many hours of building new puzzles. Here is where that money comes from.
Adverts in marked spaces
Advertising pays the bills. Reading pages — the front page, the set archive and its brew lists, the games list, the rules page and the guides — each have one space marked “Advertisement”, and an advert can appear nowhere else. We are getting those spaces ready for Google AdSense. Until it is switched on, there is just a little note from us in each one, addressed to advertisers and sponsors.
The desk where you solve — the daily set, each numbered set and each game page — stays free of advertising, and so do the pages about Toque itself: about, contact, privacy and terms.
Sponsored puzzles
A company can also support Toque directly by sponsoring one of the four puzzles or a run of numbered sets. Sponsored blocks always carry the words “Sponsored by …” followed by the company name, so they cannot be taken for our own writing. Sponsors have no say over the puzzles or the answers.
Not on the menu
- Adverts on the desk itself, between the tiles or over the puzzle buttons.
- Paid help: hints, answers and extra sets are never for sale.
- Selling anything we learn about visitors, to anyone.
- Pop-ups that land on top of a puzzle you are solving.
